In 2024, there was a record number of layoffs in the gaming industry. Many developers then repeated the words "just survive until 2025," hoping that by the year's end, mass layoffs would be a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, these hopes turned out to be vain. The latest example of this is Eidos Montreal studio, known for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

  1. The scale of layoffs at Eidos Montreal will be big. 75 developers will say goodbye to their jobs.
  2. The studio explains that a project they are working on is almost finished (without specifying which one), and these 75 employees aren't required for the team's other games.

Eidos Montreal has been owned by the Embracer Group since 2022. This corporation has serious financial trouble and Volition, known for the Saints Row series.

The layoffs at Eidos Montreal this year are not the first the studio has faced from Embracer. In January 2024, the corporation canceled the new installment of the Deus Ex series and, in the process, laid off 97 developers.

Right now, Eidos Montreal is helping the Playground Games team with the new installment of the Fable series. We don't know if the studio is also working on something of their own.
