The fourth part of a series of platform puzzle games in which we play the role of square characters; the heroes can replicate their own shapes, which allows them to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles blocking their way. The title also allows you to play alone or in the company of another player in a cooperation mode.

Boxboy! + Boxgirl! is the fourth installment in the Boxboy series, which is a mix of platform and puzzle game. The game was developed by HAL Laboratory, also known for creating the previous installments in the series as well as a number of games under the Kirby.

Plot

Depending on which game mode the player chooses, Boxboy! + Boxgirl! tells a different story. In A Tale for One mode, players take on the role of a square hero named Qbby or his companion Qucy; their task is to stop the meteorite from hitting the planet they inhabit. In A Tale for Two, the main role is played by Box Dad and Box Mom, who help small Box Baby to the rest of the square family. A Tall Tale is a bonus variant of the game, in which one gets to meet Qudy, who is a rectangle and is waiting to be checked.

Mechanics

The action is shown from the side perspective. The game consists of 270 levels. Completing them requires players solve logical puzzles and avoid numerous traps. Protagonists can replicate their own shapes and then create additional platforms, move them along the surface, and use them as missiles, shields or teleporters. It is complicated by the fact that at each stage players have a limited number of squares (or rectangles, if one controls Qudy) that they can create.

During the game, players win medals, which they can exchange for various hints to help solve demanding puzzles, gadgets, as well as comics and songs from the soundtrack.

Game modes

In Boxboy! + Boxgirl! one can play alone or in cooperation with another player. As mentioned above, there are three main gameplay modes available: a Tale for One, designed to work with A Tale for Two, and A Tall Tale mode, which needs to be unlocked. Interestingly enough, the cooperative campaign can also be completed on its own by switching between the protagonists. There also is the bonus Balloon Challenge mode, where players are tasked with breaking through all the balloons on consecutive levels within the specified time limit.
