Release Date: cancelled
A cancelled third-person action adventure game, based on the 1989 comic book by the same name. Gotham by Gaslight was supposed to take us to the 19th century Gotham City, in which Batman would be hunting down Jack the Ripper. The creators were planning various gadgets, including a flashlight which would be a futuristic gadget back then.
Gotham by Gaslight is a cancelled adventure action game, based on the comic book released in 1989 under the same title, made by Brian Augustyn (author) and Mike Mignola (illustrator). The game was being developed by the American team Day 1 Studios, and the release was to be handled by THQ company. However, the project did not go beyond the prototyping phase.
In Gotham by Gaslight we would watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The plan was to allow the players to embody Bruce Wayne, who as Batman would traverse the titular Gotham City, hunting for Jack the Ripper.
The game would allow us to both explore the narrow, cobblestone streets of the city illuminated by the glow of gas lamps, and move around the rooftops. It was also supposed to offer combat with opponents and provide us with access to Batman's gadgets. Due to the era in which the game's action would be set, one of these latter items was supposed to be a flashlight, which in the 19th century could be considered a futuristic invention. Additionally, we would gain the ability to slow down time.
In the game, we would also have the ability to change the Dark Knight's costumes. Apart from the characteristic costume equipped with a cape, we would have at our disposal an alternative one, which would be devoid of it.
Gotham by Gaslight would most likely be an adaptation of the comic book original. The game would therefore transport us to an alternative, "Victorian" version of Gotham City from the 19th century. The main antagonist of Batman would be Jack the Ripper, who would come to this city in search of new victims. The game could show us not only an alternative version of Batman, but also Commissioner Gordon cooperating with him.
