Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft for PC, AND and iOS is a logical card game. It is based on free-to-play model with micro-payments system. The main element of the game is play against other people using the Battle.net service. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft was developed by a small team of 15 people at Blizzard Entertainment, creators of many great game series such as Diablo, StarCraft, Warcraft, and World of Warcraft.

The rules are similar to those known from other card games such as, for example, Magic: The Gathering. The background is based on the world of Azeroth in which the series of Warcraft and World of Warcraft are set. The players choose one of nine character classes available in this universe, and then, one by one, play cards from their deck which results in casting spells, using special weapons or abilities, or summoning allies. The basics are easy to learn and the player does not have to be an expert who knows the ins and outs of both the Warcraft universe as well as other card games. There are also training battles available in which the opponents are the strategists from the world of Azeroth such as Thrall, Uther, or Gul'dan.

Expansion

Puzzle

Hearthstone: Knights of the Frozen Throne is the sixth expansion for the free-to-play card game Hearthstone. It was developed by Blizzard Entertainment and can be bought through the game’s store for either real or in-game currency. This expansion focuses on Lich King’s army and his kingdom of Northrend. Just like the Whispers of the Old Gods DLC, Knights of the Frozen Throne tells an alternate version of the well-known events. This time we will see what would have happened if the greatest heroes of Azeroth (Jauna Proudmoore, Rexxar, and others) became Death Knights, the undead servants of the Lich King. Knights of the Frozen Throne continues Blizzard’s policy of not releasing small Adventure DLCs and focusing on bigger ones. We get a set of 135 cards inspired by the Lich King’s army and the theme of death, including nine cards of a completely new type – Hero Cards. After using them, our hero changes into a Death Knight, gets a new portrait, war cry, ability, and a few points of armor which allows us to change our play style. We can test the new cards in PvP matches or in the single player campaign, during which we will be able to face the Lich King himself. The expansion also introduces a new battlefield and card backs.

We follow the team of explorers led by Elise Starseeker, encountering mighty dinosaurs, wild elementals, carnivorous plants and many other interesting organisms. Add-on introduced 135 new cards, a new keyword (skill) called Adapt, and a new card type (Task), as well as a board with an Un’Goro crater theme and a card back fossil. Developers also implemented another group of minions, consisting of Elementals. It consists not only of magical creatures from this expansion, but also some older cards.

Another story expansion for the incredibly popular free-to-play CCG, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft by Blizzard Entertainment. The plot of Mean Streets of Gadgetzan is focused on gang wars that occur in the eponymous Gadgetzan which turned into a metropolis teeming with life thanks to rapidly-developing trade. The city’s development, apart from merchants, also brought hordes of thugs to its streets. After numerous battles between the local crime families, only the strongest three remain. The gameplay is somewhat different than what the vanilla game and the previous DLCs got us used to. The developers introduced new cards that can be used not by one but by three different classes. Moreover, there are three completely new factions (Grimy Goons, Jade Lotus, Kabal), each offering three hero classes.

Another expansion to the blockbuster digital card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft by the Blizzard company. The add-on One Night in Karazhan introduces new adventure, in which we are invited to a great party organized by wizard Medivh in the titular tower. We meet various prominent people, like the majordomo Moroes, against whom obviously we can duel. All of this to find the host who has mysteriously vanished at the beginning of the party. Expansion does not offer any ground-shaking novelties, with the biggest one being introduction of a pack of 45 completely new cards. It also presents players with previously unseen board of Karazhan tower and enhances gameplay with portals, which warp time and space to allow for summoning of random minions. Finally, there are more class-specific challenges that enable us to acquire special cards.

April 26, 2016

Puzzle

Another official DLC to the popular card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft developed by studio Blizzard. The plot of the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion focuses on the eponymous creatures that awakened after sleeping for thousands of years. It adds the characters of Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, N’Zoth and C’Thun to the game. In addition to these very powerful characters, in the set there are also cards with cultists who boost statistics of the aforementioned heroes. An update that changes the main game is also a vital part of the expansion – it divides the previous game model into two formats: the Standard and Wild. The latter is the classic game mode and the former limits the possibility of creating cards only to the ones that were released in the current or previous years. The classic and basic cards remain with no limits.

The game's story revolves around the titular League of Explorers, an organization set up by King Magni Bronzebeard to study the origins of dwarves. The plot begins when the League discovers traces of a powerful artifact which, if it fell into wrong hands, could inflict unimaginable damage to the world. The player's task is to find all parts of the legendary artifact, hidden in three different locations. As in previous expansions, the whole adventure is divided into four wings, and in each of them we face a variety of opponents with powerful bosses waiting at the end of each stage. In Hearthstone: The League of Explorers we will also find a set of new battlefields, 45 new cards, 9 class challenges and a new keyword “discover”. Fourth major DLC for the extremely popular collectible card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft from Blizzard. The expansion, developed by the creators of the base game, revolves around the eponymous tourney, organized periodically by of the Argent Crusade for the bravest knights of Azeroth. The add-on features 132 new cards, introducing new weapons and spells as well as additional minions (e.g. Maiden of the Lake, Chillmaw or Frost Giant). A brand new feature, Inspiration, was added to the game mechanics; it consists in the fact that if there is a minion with this keyword on the table, a special effect will be activated each time the controlling hero uses their Hero Power. The Grand Tournament features also a new battlefield, enriched with additional objects, new card back as well as new rewards available in the Arena. Contrary to the first DLC expansion focusing on the plot, the second expansion mainly introduces completely new sets of cards into the game. These are related to the age-old rivalry between the two titular races - goblins and gnomes. The expansion comes with 120 new cards in total, depicting different crazy inventions and units. A new type of ers, mechs, was added - both neutral and for specific classes only. The cards coming with this expansion can be purchased both for virtual and real money at the in-game store. Hearthstone is accessible and fun. Even without purchasing cards it's a very fun game to play and winning repeatedly is very possible. The game's mechanics are easily learned, but combining them into a winning strategy is a complex and fun process.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: by Rich Stanton

This type of call-and-response has always been the lifeblood of card games but Hearthstone's position as one of the first potentially mass-market CCGs with an excellent online infrastructure makes things exciting. As for the 'free-to-play' tag, this is one of the few games that will make Western players love the business model. It's as simple as that.

Full Review

Destructoid: 8 / 10 by Ben Pack

Overall Hearthstone is a lot of fun to play, and has potential to be a game that stays around for a long time. While it may not be as complicated as an actual collectible card game, or have the appeal of showing off your collection to your friends, it is a great videogame that has minimal issues and is in a neat package, so it would be foolish to try to compare it to something it's not trying to be.
