The PC, AND and etc. release of OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood is a sequel to a 2D retro arcade game entitled OlliOlli – the first installment has been developed by an independent British studio called Roll7. As the subtitle might suggest, the amiable skater known from the previous installment gets to visit entirely new places associated with the movie industry.

Mechanics

The gameplay mechanics have not changed much since the previous game and they build on traversing consecutive locations on a skateboard and performing breakneck tricks and evolutions. The skater continuously moves rightwards without a possibility to either stop or turn around. On their way, players are bound to encounter multiple obstacles such as quarter pipes, hills, etc. One's objective is to get the best score possible for performing the tricks. Players get to observe the action from the side perspective – as befits a true arcade game.

For the game, developers have designed five entirely new levels based on real locations associated with the movie industry. This has resulted in 50 new stages filled with obstacles, alternative routes, and 250 diverse challenges available on various difficulty levels. The base of possible tricks has been expanded, while the combo system has been significantly improved.

Game modes

Apart from the game modes known from the previous installment, such as Daily Grind, Spots Mode, and RAD Mode, OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood introduces the entirely new Combo Rush mode – it has been designed for a local multiplayer for up to 4 players, who are tasked with getting the best score possible within a limited amount of time. The game described herein has received an expanded release entitled OlliOlli 2: XL Edition, in which one can enjoy a yet another mode called Free-Skate with developed, yet simplified levels allowing the players to familiarize themselves with the basic rules of the game and perfect their skating skills.

Technical aspects

The PC, AND and etc. release of OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood delivers 16-bit retro visuals enriched with certain new elements of the environment that add some color to the game. Textures are now smoother, while the character animations are much more eye-catching than those one might have seen in the previous installment. Interestingly enough, OlliOlli 2 utilizes the Share Play functionality that allows a player to invite his friends, even those who do not own their copy of the game, to play together.
