Steel Division: Normandy 44 is a PC battle strategy game designed by French studio Eugen Systems, known for the Act of Aggression.
Steel Division: Normandy 44 is a battle strategy, which expands on gameplay mechanics of the Wargame series, however, it drops modern warfare, featured in those games, for the World War II. As the title suggests, the game focuses on the fights waged in Normandy in 1944.
Battles are played in real time and are characterized by their huge scale. Combat mechanics are deeply rooted in realism, letting you use tactics that were common during that period. Devising a proper tactics, positioning of your troops, and flanking are keys to victory. Soldier behavior is based on the system of morale – too much stress reduces your men’s combat effectiveness or can even make them flee in panic. Authors also took care for maximum realism of locations by creating terrains based on authentic recon maps from the period.
In Steel Division: Normandy 44 for PC battles are divided into three phases, which correspond to the course of actual WWII skirmishes. At the beginning of each stage of a battle you get access to new types of units. For example, initially, you only have the fast, light tanks, while heavy vehicles only come in at the beginning of the third phase.
The game includes over 400 units, which were meticulously recreated, based on historical data. Apart from infantry, tanks and vehicles you can also send in planes. They comprise the playable armies of such nations as , the United States, , Canada, England, Scotland, and Poland.
All this is available throughout the expansive single player campaign as well as in multiplayer, letting up to 20 players take part in large online battles.
Single player campaigns featured in Steel Division: Normandy 44 will be based on actual WWII operations, letting you command three divisions: the American 82nd Airborne Division, the German 21. Panzerdivision and the Scottish 15th Infantry Division.
