Expedition 33: How to improve relationships with characters?

In Clair Obscur Expedition 33, you can build relationships with all party participating in the titular expedition. It's worth doing it, because apart from the plot exposition, you will receive special items and attacks for reaching subsequent levels of relationships. How to build relationships with characters?

Although the opportunity to converse by the fire with the expedition's heroes is available early in the game, the relationship-building mechanic becomes a fully-developed feature after completing the first act.

You can build relationships with five heroes:

1. Lune;
2. Maelle;
3. Sciel;
4. Esquie;
5. Monoco.

During breaks at the camp, you will have the opportunity to talk with party and choose the option to spend time with them. During the conversations, they will gradually open up to you and reveal more details about themselves. It's worth regularly visiting the camp and checking if new interactions with other characters are available. It doesn't cost you anything, and besides the additional narrative context related to the characters, you can unlock special rewards after reaching certain relationship levels with specific characters.

What do relationships with characters provide?

Each of the characters has 7 relationship levels. Acquiring the first few levels is not too difficult and usually comes down to talking to a character while in the camp. Around level 6, characters will assign you a side quest related to their past, which will take you to a completely separate location. Completing this mission is necessary to max out the relationship with the hero or heroine.

In the second act of the game, you will unlock gradient attacks and receive the basic form of this skill for each character.To acquire new, stronger gradient attacks, you will need to develop relationships with each of the characters. You will unlock second level attacks after reaching level 4 of the relationship. The strongest level 3 attacks require reaching the maximum level of relationships (level 7).

Finally, the additional rewards for reaching new relationship levels are unique cosmetic items or treasures. Among them are vinyl records and new hairstyles. It's also worth noting that reaching level 7 relationship with a given character will reward you with a special achievement.
